The Series
“The Life of a Line”
Exploring life in time spent here, “The Life of a Line” series is an ongoing project since its conception in 2019. Here, the essence of to come & to go yet to be done & to exist soon, now, & then. Time less grand than historical events does not travel in time the same. There being value in all impact of interactions with the present, all was here just the same. Present. Made up of lines in the length of time, the matter of a line in this series consists of structures, visuals, and dynamics. Giving life to lines here & now for now & on.
How?
Technique
One life, one line.
Nothing but a blank page, pen, & endlessly vague idea of where to go next, not even documenting the mid-drawing of one line can accurately evoke the headspace it means to be in the moment in one line in present. From start to finish, beginning to end. One line, one life.
A complex simple, rules of thumb for approaching each line are:
- One line
- Start & finish of line must be visible
- Must be able to follow the line through and through
- No lifting pen off paper
- Blank page to be blank on creation
Necessary for concept, 1, 2, & 3. Not necessary, yet preferred to aid concept & skill mastery, 4 & 5.
What?
Impressions
To be a life line.
Not all lines with proper technique are considered part of the series when they lack impression. What is an impression? Briefly described, it is a depiction of an interaction with time in time. In creation, the line is of honing in to the challenges of facing time’s present. In completion, the line is of portrayals of existence in relation to remnants of happenings in time via the dialogue of impressions.
Lines without impressions with technique applied are still works perfecting the continuous line technique.
When?
Grammar
Livin’ between the line.
Impressions come in mishmash just as happening do. Able to be conjugated in their own way, impressions are to lines similar to how verbs are to sentences. In most, the entire length of a line is not an impression. Not as refined as standard language structures, impressions are their own visual language still in the beginning stages to be explored. Dialogue of impressions ranges from marks, smears, gradients, texture, and more to convey a moment of motion, a moment of life, a moment of existence.
